Theories of Architecture & Urbanism ARC 2224

Project: Theorizing Architecture
The main objective of this project is to convey an understanding of architect's architectural theory through observation and analysis of their projects. It will support students’ learning since doing architecture can be developed by studying the work of others. This project is divided into 2 parts: analyzing self & analyzing and theorizing architecture. In the first part, we are required to choose an area and architecture before doing analysis. After that, we are required to analyze the place and theories from the theorist chosen in diagram and text form.
The following pictures show the works has been done for part 1.

Essay

On the part 2 of this project, we are required to do 2 boards of analysis diagram about how we interpret the building and the theories applied when the architects were designing the building. To support the diagrams made, a 2000 words essay was required. The following link show the work done.

Architectural Design Studio 4 ARC 2126

Project 1- Green Info-Shelter: Exploring The Environment Poetics

In this project, we are divided into groups with two students and were assigned a design assessment about a green info-shelter that respond to the basic natural site context. The location of the placement for the structure designed is at an open area in Taylor's University. The designed structure should serve the purpose of providing info on events and activities in CODA (Exhibition Room) & SABD (School of Architecture, Building & Design).

From this project, we have learnt how to develop our design to suit the related site context in terms of the ventilation, sun path, local needs and cultural etc. Besides that, we also learnt how to design without ignoring the importance of sustainability towards the environment. In order to achieve sustainability, we get to learnt the types of material that are more sustainable and able to apply it appropriately on our design.

Project 2: Nature Appreciation Center

This project required us to design a nature appreciation center on the site that was chosen by the lecturers. In this project, we need to consider the site context such as site topography, climate, existing structures and nature approaches etc. Besides that, the nature appreciation center should be designed in a form of clustered spatial typology. The objective of this project is to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design. Besides that, it will also help the students to develop their ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with the buildings.

From this project, I have further enhance my experience of how to design a public space that concern on the sustainability. Besides that, I have also enhance my 3d modelling skill and also photoshop skill.

Building Science 1 BLD60803

Project 1: Case Study: Identifying innovative passive design                              strategies

In this project, we are required to work in  a group of six to research on two different building which have been awarded with GBI platinum, gold, or silver by green mark system. The selection of the buildings are from two specific areas which are Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia and Singapore. The research areas of these two buildings include passive design strategies, site analysis on the wind direction and sun path, the average temperature throughout a year etc.

The objective of this project are:
- To identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people.
- To understand what is thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to the thermal comfort.
- To analyse the effect of thermal comfort factors in a person and in a space.
- To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525, UBBL,GBI and Green Mark standards.

First research report- Solaris, Singapore

Second research report- The Pinnacle, Bandar Sunway, Malaysia

Through this project, I am able to identify environmental conditions that relate to site conditions, climate etc. Beside that, I also learnt how the position of sun affect the building and the related shading strategies and building orientation to solve the rise in the thermal condition in a building. Furthermore, I get to know more passive designs that have been used to achieve thermal comfort instead of the mechanism systems.

Building Construction 2 ARC 2513

Project 1: Understanding Forces in Skeletal Structure

In this project, we are required to build a skeletal structure and test out the weight capacity it can resist. In order to achieve the minimum weight set by the lecturers, me and my group member have done a series of experiments on how to set up the structure and its bracing. These structures are build up with the limited materials mention in the project brief which are maximum 100 popsicle sticks, toothpicks, thread, pins and a base in a5 size. There are few others limitation such as no glue can be used, and tower height should at least 30 cm.

Objective of this project are:
- To create an understanding of skeletal structure and its relevant structural components.
- To understand how a skeletal structure reacts under loading.
- To demonstrate a convincing understanding of how Skeletal Construction works.
- To be able to manipulate Skeletal Construction to solve an oblique design problem.

Load Testing- 108 kg

Report of this project

Through this project, I am able to apply construction system in design. Besides that, I also understand which types of bracing suits to resists the vertical and lateral forces. This project has also help me in knowing the implication of construction in design. Furthermore, I am able to analyse the issue of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

In this project, we are required to produce a structure of either surface or solid types and a related report. The materials used to construct the structural model should be able to represent the real materials used in the construction of the building. We have selected a surface building named O2 arena in London, England and analyse this building thoroughly. In the end, we have come out with the model and report showed in below.

Progress and Outcome

Report

Through this project, I have learnt that the differences between surface and solid structure construction. It helps me further design which surface structure is more beneficial in organic design. Besides that, I also learnt that some construction details in the solid and surface construction so that it makes my further design constructible.
